0:36Justin: Andrew and I have been hockey rivals for. How long have we known each other? Almost 15 years. 15 years. 2008. No. When did we meet? No. 20. 12. 2012. So. 12. 12 years. So we've known each other for 12 years.

0:54Andrew: It felt like 15, though.

0:55Justin: Yeah, I felt like 20. That's what I said in Ageless. Andrew. Die Hard Oilers fan.

1:00Andrew: Die Hard. Die Hard, like, had season tickets through the decade of darkness. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:07Justin: And I am a Die Hard Flames fan. You are, like, to the core. But we have put that to the side.

1:15Andrew: We're trying to. Because now we live in the. We'll just call it the Tri Cities

1:21Justin: area of the kwc.

1:22Andrew: The kwc. No one says that. They should.

1:26Justin: They should. Because I am in the Soo They might now, because of this, we are starting a trend. And you live in the K. I do.

1:49Justin: The T is for sure our. One of our bonding points.

1:54Justin: We don't cheer for the T. We

1:55Andrew: don't like the tea.

1:56Justin: No. So we got the kw, the C and no T. And we, like, totally fell in love with the Kitchener Rangers. I know it wasn't your first game, but the first game I went to was with you. And it was a crazy blowout. Like, it was. We were five minutes left in the third period and I think the Rangers were up. Were like five or six to one. And it was right before the playoffs.

2:20Andrew: Yeah.

2:20Justin: This was two years ago.

2:21Andrew: It was. Yeah. 23. The peak of the playoff push.

2:24Justin: It would have been 20 playoffs.

2:26Andrew: Yeah.

2:26Justin: So we were at the Aud Rangers just. I don't remember who they were playing. Destroying the opposition.

2:32Andrew: Yeah, I think it was Flint. I don't know why.

2:34Justin: Yeah, maybe it was Flint.

2:35Andrew: Something like that.

2:37Justin: Destroying the competition.

2:38Andrew: Yeah.

2:38Justin: So we went up. You were like, oh, I want to show you. They have like the cool, like, memorabilia area.

2:43Andrew: Yes.

2:43Justin: They have the Kadri jersey. They got some stuff. And I was like, oh, yeah, I definitely want to see that. So we like, got up, we went. And then your wife was also at the game. She was not with us. She was with a friend. And so we walked around to go see. And the opposite team hit Flint. We'll say flint. Flint. Yeah, Flint. He scored three goals. He tied it up. And then they tied it. We were standing there, then we tied it. The, like, the Aud had been going

3:10Andrew: ballistic, which it always does. Yeah.

3:13Justin: It's amazing.

3:13Andrew: And I really. That's why we. We wanted to name the podcast after the Aud because the atmosphere is electric. Every person I've taken there to see a game has immediately been like, I'm in.

3:26Justin: It's insane. And it's like, at NHL, like, second or third round playoff game atmosphere on a Friday night.

3:33Andrew: It is on a Friday night. You can't beat it. It's so exciting. And the. The boys, like, respond to that. You can tell that the energy is there.

3:41Justin: Oh, yeah.

3:42Andrew: I kind of sort of grew up. I won't say grew up. I was like a late teenager, like 16, 17, 18, 19 when the oil Kings came to Edmonton, and the atmosphere was just not the Sam O'Reilly it. It's, you know, it's. They only packed half that barn. Yeah.

3:57Justin: That, you know, the Aud is full all the time.

3:59Andrew: Yeah.

4:00Justin: It's amazing. The fans are awesome. Like, everybody talks to you. Like, you're at the game, you're not wearing a jersey. People talk to you.

4:07Andrew: The ushers talk to you.

4:08Justin: The ushers tell you.

4:09Andrew: People are just excited to be there.

4:10Justin: Yeah. They're talking about the young guys who are coming up. They're talking about the superstars on the team. Like, it's an amazing energy. So. Yeah, this is what we fell in love with. We were like, this is amazing.

4:21Andrew: Which was great because we are rival fans.

4:24Justin: Yep.

4:24Andrew: And we needed to bond over something other than the hatred of the tea.

4:28Justin: Andrew and I also play a ton of fantasy hockey together.

4:32Andrew: We do.

4:32Justin: So it is like, we talk rival all the time. So this is our bonding point. This is true. This is truly where we've come together. Even though we've been good friends for 12 to 27 years.

4:45Andrew: 27, 28, 31.

4:49Justin: So, yeah, that's the. That's the origin story of us and why we're here. We got Sam O'Reilly got some, like, rangers in our teams right now. So you, like, you got Jeff Skinner, I got Nazem Kadri. Yeah. Hunter Savage repping the jersey right now.

5:02Andrew: Last year we had Paul Coffey behind the bench.

5:04Justin: This podcast, what we want to do is we. We want to Talk about the games.

5:07Andrew: We do.

5:08Justin: We want to talk. We want to talk about games that have happened. Games that are going to happen.

5:11Andrew: Yeah.

5:12Justin: Uh, we also really want to talk about, like, the community and the fans and stuff like that.

5:15Andrew: So we want to talk about the history.

5:17Justin: Well, we definitely want to talk about the history. We're in preseason right now. Honestly, neither of us have watched any preseason games. No.

5:24Andrew: Although I have seen that it has

5:26Justin: been five straight shootout wins. Yeah. Which I don't know what the statistical odds would be for that to happen.

5:32Andrew: But I mean, it's so on brand.

5:35Justin: It's so on brand for the Aud and for the Rangers and for the

5:39Andrew: ohl, which is just phenomenal hockey if you're not paying attention to it.

5:42Justin: It is just. I saw the stat the other day that they have not been in a shootout in two seasons. They have not gone to a regular season shootout in two years. And they've gone to five in the free. Five. Five straight in the only five preseason games.

6:00Andrew: And they play the Steelheads on Saturday.

6:03Justin: Oh, nice.

6:04Andrew: And honestly, like, come on, guys.

6:07Justin: You gotta. You gotta go to a shakedown. Straight. Six. We want six. Six in a movie. I don't know. Yeah. So that's what we want to talk about. We haven't watched any of the games yet, but that's going to be probably our next episode is that we're going to focus on.

6:20Andrew: We're going to break down those games and break down kind of like the team and that kind of thing. Yeah. In the next episode. This is going to be more an introduction or introductory episode. Yeah.

6:29Justin: We were going to do. But we were going to kind of look at the roster for the season.

6:32Andrew: That would be great.

6:33Justin: the Aud least we know the names. Obviously, we're still in preseason, so there's like, there's guys that. That we don't. That. That probably won't make the team. There's. There's too many guys on the roster right now to make up a team. Also, there's not enough centers. I don't know if you've seen that.

6:46Andrew: Absolutely not. Good centers are not important.

6:51Justin: Look, where's the center depth, more wingers.

6:54Andrew: It seems like it's a bit of a rebuilding year.

6:56Justin: Yeah, that's. That's what I gather. We're going to break down that Carson Rakoff trade probably in the next episode or something like that. Ten draft picks for a player.

7:05Andrew: It's the NBA.

7:06Justin: A player that might not even play.

7:07Andrew: It's the NBA of H. Right.

7:09Justin: Yeah.

7:10Andrew: Right.

7:10Justin: That's true.

7:10Andrew: Sometimes the NBA trades. You see the crazy draft picks.

7:13Justin: Yeah.

7:14Andrew: This is the ohl. They're like, you know what? We gotta have the Aud you know what, you just gotta keep giving this picks. And honestly I feel like it's that awesome thing about the OHL is that teams go all in.

7:26Justin: Yeah. Oh, for sure. Well, there's no point because you only have like a three year window of. With any one player.

7:32Andrew: Much like the, like, like college in the US or college sports. It's very similar that way that you, you. There's a finite. There's a. There's an age limit. I guess we should, we should talk about that a little bit too.

7:44Justin: Yeah. Some of the rules. Yeah.

7:46Andrew: Just in the sense of like obviously if you're listening or watching, you're probably a fan and you probably know, but we don't want to assume. Yeah. So there is. You cannot be over the age of 20. What do they call them? Over ages? After 18, right?

8:00Justin: Yes. Yeah. So basically their last eligible year to play in the ohl. Yeah. Over ager.

8:05Andrew: Yeah.

8:05Justin: I think you're only allowed a certain amount of them. Is that right?

8:08Andrew: That sounds.

8:08Justin: Or maybe it's the 16 year old. Anyway, so Andrew, we don't have to look that up. So Andrew and I, a part of this as well is that we are going to learn about this league while we learn more. Like while we're talking about these games where we're watching the games, we're going to actively learn more about this and we want you to come along with the journey. On the journey with us.

8:29Andrew: We're not afraid to Sam O'Reilly don't know.

8:31Justin: We don't know.

8:32Andrew: Now there are some things we do know.

8:35Andrew: But we don't know everything about the

8:37Justin: L. So want to talk about some roster? Let's look at the forwards. So returning forwards. One thing I definitely don't know is how to pronounce all these names. But I'm going to say them confidently like I do know what they are.

8:49Justin: Adrian Misaljevic I can almost guarantee that

8:53Andrew: that's wrong because I can't even place what that name looks like on paper.

8:58Justin: Yeah, you're right.

8:58Andrew: Yeah.

8:59Justin: Cameron Arquette. So Adrian's a right winger. Arquette is also a right winger. I saw somewhere he might play C, so that. That could be important.

9:06Andrew: Okay. That is. That is promising.

9:08Justin: Cameron Mercer, also a center.

9:09Andrew: And where, if you don't mind, where are some of. Some of these kids from? No idea. Okay. Okay, cool. Yeah. I thought you had the roster in front of you.

9:17Justin: Oh, Actually, I do. Adrian Misaljevic Okay, that sounds almost more wrong. Okay, good. He's from Woodbridge.

9:25Andrew: Oh, there you go.

9:27Justin: So are your in laws from Woodbridge. That's where they live. There you go.

9:30Andrew: Yeah.

9:31Justin: Cameron Arquette is from Wheatley.

9:33Andrew: Okay.

9:33Justin: Luke Elena's one of my favorite Toronto boy.

9:36Andrew: We won't hold that against you. But what's funny is Luke is a Ottawa senator and he is. Actually he was invited to the camp, the rookie camp.

9:47Justin: So I had it in my notes.

9:48Andrew: It's exciting.

9:49Justin: See, I didn't write down where they're from, but I can add. That's okay. Yeah, I'll add in where they're from. Yeah. Great. Okay. Then we got Matheas Stark.

9:59Andrew: Matthias.

9:59Justin: Matthias. Matthias.

10:01Andrew: Matthias. That's a strong name.

10:04Andrew: He's a lefty shooter. He's six feet. He's, you know, he's from Toronto. Another Toronto boy from the tee. Yeah. Yeah.

10:11Justin: Then we got Tanner Lam right winger.

10:13Andrew: Tanner Lam. He was with the team last year as well.

10:15Justin: He's returning. Yeah, that was noted at the beginning. That's true.

10:19Andrew: Pug life.

10:20Justin: Pug life. What else do you need to know? Hug life. He's a left winger. He's. He's great.

10:26Andrew: He's right winger on my stat, so. Yeah. Oh, either way, he's a righty.

10:31Justin: I think he's a wing.

10:31Andrew: He can play anywhere.

10:33Justin: I think he might play center because they need him, honestly. Yeah. Do you see how many C's are on that forward list?

10:37Andrew: And he's a Hamilton boy. And I don't think.

10:39Justin: Of course he's a Hamilton boy. Yeah, Hamilton. Of course. He's the bug life.

10:42Andrew: Yeah.

10:42Justin: The only one left of the point per gamers from last season, Fran Swick.

10:46Andrew: And I was broken. Well, not. I mean, I was happy for the kid, but my heart was broken when he was drafted by the Knights because I thought he was a great late later round pick.

10:57Justin: Right.

10:57Andrew: And he's. He's a big dude, six foot six. He's got a mean streak in him. Like he plays rough.

11:04Justin: Yeah.

11:04Andrew: And I'm just. I just hope if he does get a chance to go play for a contending team, if the Rangers are not as strong this year. Yeah, that would be good for him.

11:14Justin: Yeah.

11:15Andrew: But at the same time, he'll be a leader if he stays.

11:18Justin: For sure. Yeah, absolutely. Okay, then we got Justin Baton, right winger, and Luca Romano.

11:25Andrew: Yeah.

11:26Justin: Also a right winger. And then not a rookie, but also playing for the team this year is Matthew Halakar. Yeah, they signed him As a free agent from St. Gathering Falcons. That's where he played last season. Wow.

11:39Andrew: He's a big kid, too.

11:40Justin: Yeah, he's good.

11:41Andrew: 63205, lefty. Yeah. Okay.

11:43Justin: 38 points in 48 games last season. Yeah. A lot of these guys have felt like last season they were playing maybe lower in the lineups and there's a big opportunity to move up in these four. Yeah, there's obviously a lot of face time. Yeah, obviously we're going to talk about rookies, but they can only take so many rookies in a season anyways, so we're not going to see all of those rookies. So a lot of these guys, I think, are going to see significant point increases this season because somebody's got a score.

12:09Andrew: Somebody has to score. Yeah, it happened. Allegedly.

12:11Justin: Allegedly. Don't ask the San Jose Sharks how that goes. Moving on to defense. El Capitan.

12:19Andrew: There he is.

12:20Justin: Matthew Andonovski What? What?

12:27Justin: What did you hear? No, I. I said it perfectly.

Yeah, he's just getting more ice time. He's getting better. He's getting, you know, he's getting bigger and stronger every year. And he. He plays that kind of a physical game. He's. It's not a. It's not, like, pretty the way that, like, Hunter was. Yeah. You know, in a way. Yeah. But it's like he. He's a leader.

13:20Justin: Plus 58. Wow. Like, okay, plus minus is a thing where it's like. If you're plus three, I'm like, whatever. Well, yeah, when you're plus 58, you were on the ice for some goals and you didn't let up anything as a defenseman.

13:32Andrew: He's the Matthias. Matthias Ekhom of the team.

13:36Justin: How did he say his name? Stop.

13:39Andrew: I was thinking about. I was thinking about Stark, our friend Stark from earlier.

13:43Justin: Okay. Then we got Carson Campbell returning. All these guys are from Campbellford Andrew No way. Really?

13:50Andrew: Yeah.

13:50Justin: No way. Carson Campbell.

13:53Andrew: Now, if that is not the Canadian dream, you hear a lot about the American dream, but Carson Campbell from Campbellford, Andrew do you think is the pinnacle of Canadiana?

14:10Andrew: Oh, yeah. Round one. Cameron Reid number 10 overall.

14:14Justin: Cameron Reid And unless I misunderstand everything, I have seen Cameron Reid name on some NHL prospect draft list for the 2025 draft.

14:24Andrew: Beautiful.

14:24Justin: Good for him. Yeah, he's been. He hasn't. He hasn't maybe cracked the top sort of 50, because that's kind of where we're at right now is for prospecting.

14:31Andrew: Yeah.

14:32Justin: But, yeah, definitely as a notable player. He's been. He's been popping up. So Cameron Reid looking forward to watching him. I honestly have no idea how these defensemen are going to pan out, but I think this is some pretty. Pretty solid guys to put on the top of your defensive corner.

14:49Andrew: I feel like every year that we've watched, which is the last couple years, defense seems like a point of strength. I think that it's the ohl.

14:56Justin: So there's games where it's a little scrambly.

14:59Andrew: Right. It's scrambling. Yeah. But it seems like the Kitchener Rangers kind of have, like, at the very least, they have a bit of, like, a steady eddy kind of scenario going on.

15:09Justin: Yeah, for sure. Some might say kind of like the Calgary Flames of the ohl.

15:14Andrew: I'm not going to say that.

15:15Justin: Definitely not the Oilers.

15:16Andrew: Of the.

15:17Justin: Definitely not the Oilers. I will say that. Yeah. Yeah.

15:48Justin: And Andrew MacNiel notable of these defensemen. Campbell and McNeil, both bright shot. Defenseman.

15:56Justin: You know, so that.

15:57Andrew: Oh, they're a little light on the right shot.

15:59Justin: Yeah, they are a little light. So I. I suspect that those two guys will probably get a higher shot at being higher up the lineup just based on that. So we'll see how that goes. Only one returning goalie this season is our friend Mr. Jackson. Jackson Parsons.

16:17Justin: Yeah, he's so great.

16:18Andrew: I think this kid is, like, he can be a goalie at the highest level. I'm not saying he's going to be a star in the NHL. I'M saying he can be a goalie

16:27Justin: at the highest level. You know who he reminds me of? Jake Allen.

16:30Andrew: Hey, that's. That's. Jake Allen had a long career.

16:33Justin: Okay.

16:33Andrew: He's also in camp. He's also in camp, Louisiana.

16:36Justin: Yes, that's right. Yeah.

16:37Andrew: There's a few of them, actually. I've got the list. After we finish the thing, we'll quickly say, this is who's in camp.

16:42Justin: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Goalies, of course, are always slow. Actually, I was. I was hearing that they're. I was listening to the OHL podcast. Is it weird to. On an inaugural podcast to talk about another podcast? No, I was listening to the OHL podcast today and they were talking about how maybe there's some rumblings about expanding the age limit on goalies because they take so much longer to develop. So they kind of get stuck. Right.

17:04Andrew: They do. I think a lot of goalies. Careers kind of flame out quick because there's one. There's not a lot of nets.

17:09Justin: Correct.

17:09Andrew: Right.

17:10Justin: There's. There's.

17:10Andrew: There's only one net on each team and it's like you. You can only get so many games. Yeah. And the one positive thing for goalies is that now at like the highest level NHL and even like, you know, like, you look at the ah. And the echl, they are. Most of them are tandems.

17:27Justin: Rigus is too much work now, the rookies. So I'm going to kind of fly through these. I'm going to stop on one for sure.

17:34Andrew: Yeah.

17:35Justin: Avry Anstis, right winger, forward.

17:45Andrew: Also, there are so many Camerons on this team.

18:11Justin: Yeah, he's 16. It's a bummer for his development. Yeah.

18:15Andrew: But I don't know how much ice time he would have gotten anyway.

18:21Andrew: And you know, I mean, I'll Sam O'Reilly take a glass half full. He's five seven, one fifty. Yeah. He's a 2008 baby. Like January 2008. Think that while he's rehabbing the wrist, he can put on a few pounds. Yeah. He might even grow. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like that's how young these kids are for sure, you know, so.

18:42Justin: Yeah, and when we're talking about these guys, like, we're definitely taking, we're taking out. We know they're kids, but they're also professionals, like semi pros. Semi pros.

18:52Justin: Is that what they are? Yeah, but yeah, there's like a professional feature in their absolute eye line. So it's like, you know, we want to treat them like that, but also we also know that some of them are 16.

19:04Justin: Jake Lebras. What did I just see about him? He seems like he's Jack Lebras.

19:29Andrew: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's, that's when I see a right shot defenseman on the Kitchener Rangers. And they need right shot defenseman. Everybody needs right shot defenseman. And he's. He was drafted high.

19:43Justin: Yes, he was.

19:44Andrew: I'm excited.

19:45Justin: You know, obviously we can't make it through, like all the rookies, like, you're not going to make the team. Yeah, but that's a third pairing. Right shot D that you might need there.

19:52Andrew: I think you need him. Yeah, he's, you know, he's 2008, born in May, so he's young, but you need him.

19:59Justin: Yeah. And he's. Yeah, he's big.

20:01Andrew: Yeah, he's big already. Yeah. All right.

20:03Justin: Owen Edwards, goalie is. Yeah, yeah.

20:06Andrew: And he's 6:3, so there's some size there. Yeah. Which is, which is usually what they're looking for. And right now the screen I'm looking at says shoots right. But I'm wondering if that's catches.

20:18Justin: That's interesting.

20:18Andrew: If they have a, they have a lefty catch, Parsons and a righty catch, Owen Edwards. Because that just, that's just an interesting thing for other teams to go up against.

20:30Justin: The last goalie is Jason Schaubel Very young as well. Yeah. Super young.

20:34Andrew: Yeah, yeah.

20:35Justin: Like I said, these are all rookies just in camp. So we'll see. We'll see. How do these guys who, who, who sticks around. Who what? I don't even know what happens like in the NHL if, if a player doesn't make camp they go to the ahl or they might get sent back to their OHL team or. Or another.

20:51Andrew: Yeah, well, they can't go back to Bantam.

20:53Justin: Yeah.

20:53Andrew: Right. Because that's a low.

20:54Justin: Yeah. So what do you get? Where do you go? This is. This is something we can look up,

20:59Justin: But we don't have to answer this now. No, this is a question.

21:01Andrew: But there's different, Right? There's Junior A, there's Junior B. Yeah. You know, you wouldn't be going to Junior B, but you'd be going maybe from major Junior to Junior A. I don. Know. We'll find out.

21:12Justin: That was kind of our goal for this. This episode. We wanted to. We wanted to lay down the roster, take a look, just sort of chat through them. Oh, yeah. Who's in. Who's in NHL training camps? Yeah.

21:52Andrew: Yeah, he's a Wrangler. He signed with the Wrangler. Well, signed with the Wranglers. He reported.

21:58Justin: And yeah, they're doing their training camp this. So hopefully it will go well.
