53: Holiday Extravaganza 2

0:00Justin: Twas the night before the holiday break and all through the Aud not a player was stirring, not even the shob. The Rangers stood proudly, their season first rate with 19 wins, 10 losses and OT losses at 3. The top of the division. Can't take that away from thee. On Pridham, on Humphreys, on Stark and Arquette. The Lamb revenge tour. We will never forget the. Through blue lines and breakouts, they skate with great cheer, pulling the Rangers faithful through another memorable year. Now Reed, now Chromiak, now Campbell and Bilecki. Defensive shutdowns, an offense that make you feel lucky. To the top of the league, we'll give it our all. Dash away, dish away, sauce away. All. The Memorial Cup to us not awarded. And to some of the fans, it feels like we were thwarted. But a challenger rises to which the Rangers can thrive. A championship run, the juice would abide. With half of the season now left in the dust, Mike McKenzie working behind the scenes to ensure the team is robust. We believe in the team to give it their all. But what I will say is I did count. And there's 11. Like, I'll call them pure. Oh. On. On the team, which is pretty incredible. Of course, there's going to be a little bit of bias because Hunter is the coach and they're. They're. The two Hunters are picking the team. So there's going to be a little

4:31Andrew: That's exactly it. That's exactly it.

4:33Andrew: So I went through some of these guys that I didn't recognize, and there's some absolute monsters on this team. This is. This team gets me excited. If you're not excited about Gavin McKenna, Porter Martone and Tjginla and Jet Lachenko and Brady Martin, you've got. On defense right now. We know that Zane Perek and Cameron Reider paired up together.

4:56Andrew: That's nuts. Yeah. Like, there was a couple guys. Like, there's a guy undrafted out of the WHL. That's. Yeah, I know, I know.

5:04Andrew: Ethan McKenzie. He's 19, undrafted. I looked. He's plays for Edmonton. He's Having a crazy year.

5:11Andrew: Yeah. And so does he make it? I don't know. Because the defense is stacked. Like so stacked. Like we know Kishan Aison's making the team. Yeah. I would assume Harrison Brunicki is. He's a Penguins draft pick. He's been playing with the Penguins. He's been playing with Wilkes. Barry. It's like you're telling me that he's not making the team. Right, Right. He's a right shot defenseman and he's playing for the Penguins. Like I. And then you've got, you've got a 17 year old and Keaton Verhoff who's like lighting up the ncaa, who's from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

5:43Andrew: Right near where I'm from. Yeah. And he's 6, 4, 212 at 17 years old. Like, you think he's not making the team?

5:50Justin: Yeah.

5:50Andrew: I'm like, who do they not take on defense? Because they've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 right now on defense. And like I was making the lines. Ben Danford is one of the guys from Branford who just got traded to Branford.

6:06Justin: Yeah. Like, who's also crazy good.

6:08Andrew: Yeah, I know. I'm like, who. There's a guy out of the NCAA from Calgary named Jackson Smith. He's 64205. You want that size? You could just take all of these monsters.

6:19Andrew: Because you're going to have Perek and Reed as puck movers. That could, they could both be like power play quarterbacks. Yeah. Right.

6:28Andrew: And then you've got just Sean Agents who does it all. Yeah. And then you've got all these other guys who are just massive.

6:35Andrew: And the offense is like a who's who of junior players. So it is. Gavin McKenna is one of four undrafted players.

6:46Andrew: Obviously because he's 17, going to be 18. But it's just a crazy lineup. And last year I wasn't super excited about the roster. I thought it was missing some obvious people.

6:57Andrew: This, this year I'm like, who are they going to cut? Yeah, you're looking. And like I said, the guys that I'm not necessarily super familiar with, they're all drafted. They're all like legit NHL talent. Prospects.

7:10Andrew: So you're like, okay, I don't know. Who knows it's going to. I wouldn't want to be the one to make that decision.

9:52Andrew: hasn't played, is what I wanted to say. So if he was playing, I think he'd be there. Yeah. Yep.

9:59Justin: All right, so World Juniors, check it out. The next thing we're going to do. Andrew, now we're really going to get into our holiday episode.

10:07Justin: So we're going to start with a segment we're calling Best Christmas Ever. And this is Andrew and I are going to gift the Kitchener Rangers. I said one gift, but it sounds like Andrew got two, and I also got two. But maybe if they're the same, then we got them the same gift and then somebody has to go to refund it. And like, yeah, you got to get in line at Bed, Bath and Beyond and receipts. And the beyond is really what the refund is part of. Yeah.

10:32Andrew: Anyway, you only have 30 days.

10:34Justin: Oh, yeah. And they extend it for the holidays, but. Yeah. Who wants to go January 4th? Who wants to spend their time? Exactly.

10:41Andrew: Who wants to get out in January at all? The only thing I'm willing to leave the house for is the Rangers game.

11:37Andrew: I just think. I think he works really hard away from the puck. He does everything right. I think the reason why he's in the lineup every night is that the coaches. He does everything that the coaches asked for of him. Now we just need for him to put a puck in the net. And that's my Christmas wish.

11:53Justin: I'm going to gift Cameron Reid and Christian Kirsch phenomenal World Juniors tournaments. Because we have seen guys go to these tournaments and come back new and rejuvenated men. Not that we need them to be because they have both been performing exceptionally this year.

So we're jumping ahead to January the Aud a weird Freaky Friday situation. For whatever reason, Andrew and I both swap bodies with Mike McKenzie, which actually sounds like the worst Christmas present ever for Mike McKenzie. Mike McKenzie. But also for literally anybody who cares about the Rangers. Yeah. But in this weird instance where we body swap with Mike McKenzie, what's the move that you do on trade deadline day that's going. And what's your motivation behind that move?

13:28Andrew: I probably like to do. I probably just like bang out like a hundred pull ups because I know Mike can do it. I've seen Mike.

13:35Justin: I've seen Mike swaps back to his bodies. Am I in better shape? Yeah, I just. I just.

13:41Andrew: I completely forgot about the trade deadline. I've just been running without like Hyperventilating.

13:46Justin: I'm starving. Am I about to have a heart attack? What is it?

And I was like, there's like a good Slew of draft picks from that trade alone. Yeah. But there have been other trades and stuff that have happened that there's just like draft picks for the next few years for sure.

15:48Andrew: And like, for example, and I'm not saying this is someone you could include, but like, we don't know if Kane Barch is ever coming here.

15:55Justin: Right, Right. So you have the rights to Kane

15:57Andrew: Bar, so you could throw that in that kind of thing. It seems like he's doing really well at the, the U.S. national Development Programs. So maybe he just stays there, which is totally fine because I think they, they were like, you know what, they took a gamble. We're probably going to get the compensatory pick if he doesn't report, which. So you could package that. You could. There's. Maybe there's prospects in the system, but I don't know anybody. I wouldn't name anybody.

16:19Justin: You know what, there's an AGM to deal with that on your body swap day with Mike McKenzie. Perfect. Mike McKenzie. He's here for big moves. What's your. What's your big move? There's other people. To figure out the logistics, I am

16:30Andrew: calling Rob Papineau in Sudbury about the young man from Toronto, Andrew standing 6 foot 6, 212 pounds, who is having an absolutely banner year in Sudbury and had a crazy year last year. And that's Kieran Walton. Yeah, that's what I think the Rangers need to add. Yeah. I think if you have to move a piece of the young core, you don't do it. Yeah, unfortunately.

16:58Justin: Yeah.

16:58Andrew: But I think if they want to go next level. Do I. I think if you add a Kieran Walton to this team, they can be Brantford in the final.

17:08Justin: Right.

17:08Andrew: That's where I think the Rangers are. I think right now the Rangers are having trouble with the Soo because they don't have somebody who can shrug off the, the big, big players in the Soo Yeah. I think if there's somebody out there creating space, I think they can beat the Soo I think they're a better top to bottom team than the Soo the Soo just comes out and I hate to say it this way, punches them in the face. Yeah. And figured exactly. Yeah, yeah. And yeah. Flying elbows. Yeah, yeah. All the business. And I think if they had somebody who could just play through that and still be a top contributor offensively, he'd lead the team in goals. Right now he is 20 goals, 23 assists, 43 points in 26 games. And then last year he had 92 points in 66 games. So he's a offensive force. He's a great big player.

18:00Justin: And he's not an overager. He's.

18:01Andrew: He's not an overager. He's 19.

18:03Justin: So this is like a. This is a two year play.

18:05Andrew: It's a two year play or it's a guy that. If you can't figure out your overagers next year, if you're somebody that you don't want to lose, there's also a chance that he doesn't play OHL hockey next year.

18:16Justin: Yeah, very true.

18:16Andrew: So I don't know what draft situation. Winnipeg.

18:19Justin: Oh, okay.

18:19Andrew: So if they're anything like Ottawa.

18:21Justin: Yeah.

18:21Andrew: They could just say this guy's. This is a. This a big dude.

18:25Andrew: He doesn't really need to be playing Ohl hockey.

18:27Andrew: So it could be a rental. Yeah. I think it's something to take a chance on if they can't. If they can't make a move like that without losing. I don't want to lose a core player. That's the issue. There is. I don't think you can move somebody who's integral to like next year. You're looking further down the road if you're moving a player. Yeah. And then if they can't get a guy like that, then they have to get some grit. And I don't know where you get that. But like, they're. I think they are lacking that. I think like last year they had guys like Mercer and Grisolia.

18:56Andrew: I don't think they have those guys this year.

18:58Justin: Yeah.

18:58Andrew: And I think it's funny because those guys are probably less offensively talented than the guys. The young guys like, basically up to down the team this year. Yeah. But they don't. They bring an X factor that this theme doesn't have.

19:12Justin: Yeah.

19:13Andrew: So if you can't get Kieran Walton or someone. Karen Walton adjacent. Yeah. Then you just have to bring grit into the lineup. I think even if you're not going for it, you have to get some grit because, you know, you can't just have just Matthew Lechar be your guy. Or Andrew MacNiel just be your guy. Or Max Giricolo, just be there, be your guy. Because you need to have some grit throughout the lineup.

19:33Justin: Yeah. Okay.

19:34Andrew: What about you?

19:35Justin: Yeah. So I, I really went with let's stay the course for what we were talking.

19:39Andrew: Yeah.

19:40Justin: I know we didn't get the Memorial Cup, but next. I really feel like we're building towards next year. Like this year's team is really great. Last year's team was Unexpectedly amazing. I think we are. I think this team still has like the potential to beat Branford in the finals and go to the Memorial Cup And they don't.

19:57Andrew: If they don't. If they don't come out and let it three.

20:01Andrew: And it was a total breakdown.

20:08Justin: So the player that I feel like in. In getting next year ready that I want again in the. With the exact same caveat of you is I really don't want to lose anybody. So I don't really know how this works. Yeah. But I want to get a permanent spot for. For Forest.

20:25Justin: Into the lineup because I think he is a great player.

20:29Andrew: Yeah.

20:29Justin: I think he's too good for Todd Bertuzzi. Sorry. For the Cambridge Redhawks.

20:33Andrew: Yeah. Yeah. Whatever they're doing down there, it's working.

20:36Justin: It's working. I also only recently learned that Todd Bertuzzi was the coach of the Cambridge Redhawks. True. It's only a recent development, which makes me laugh. I just watched him be a knucklehead for too many years.

20:46Andrew: Yeah.

20:46Justin: I think Forest should get into the lineup regularly, get those regular reps, be with this team. Start gelling, start getting that chemistry built in. Because we are going to lose a couple of our defensive players next year and I think we are going to need him to step up and it's going to be a big year for him because it's going to be his draft eligible year and like all these things. So I think getting Forest into the lineup this year seems to me like a play that we need to do.

21:11Andrew: Yeah, absolutely.

21:12Justin: And obviously they've tried and there's. There's just guys. Right. Like Kaden Schneider also completely deserves to be in this lineup and he unfortunately gets scratched every once in a while just because there's too many. Too much talent.

21:23Andrew: I know. I don't know if Max is injured right now, but we haven't seen Max. He's injured. He's mostly has been out more than he's in.

21:30Justin: Yeah.

21:30Andrew: True. And think about how much hockey you played last year.

21:32Justin: I know. Yeah.
